Eat More To Lose Weight? How?

It sounds ironical but it is a fact based on scientific research that you can lose weight by actually eating more! It is as easy as that, but you have to watch what you are eating.

The principle behind this type of dieting is that you should stuff your stomach with food that is: low-fat, low-calorie, high fiber and high water such as vegetables and some fruits.

The Thermic Value

The calories required (the thermic value) to digest these types of food items are comparable to the calories they contain. The thermic value of any food is the energy required to digest and metabolize that food. The thermic value of fats is lowest and the energy provided by fats is the highest. Which means that it takes very low energy to convert dietary fat into body fat. Therefore fatty foods make you fat very easily and rapidly. On the other hand, eating vegetables and certain fruits will actually help you lose weight.

A team of scientists headed by nutritionist Dr. Barbara Rolls at The Pennsylvania State University conducted a study on 7500 men and women. The result of the study was that the group of people eating foods having low calorie, low fat, high fiber and high water (such as vegetables) were associated with lower body weights than others.

The So-Called "Volumetric Diet Plan"

Dr. Barbara Rolls coined the phrase "Volumetric Diet Plan" for the diet which has very low colorie density. The calorie density or energy density of any food item is the number of calories in a given portion of the food divided by its weight. For example The calorie density of 100 gram glucose biscuits is roughly 500 calories divided by 100 grams equal to 5 calories per gram. Similarly the calorie density of 100 gram cucumber is 13 calories divided by 100 equal to 0.13 calories per gram. Clearly, because of the very low calorie density of cucumber, its consumption will cause weight loss.
