Teaching A Child To Ride A Cycle: The First Step In The Direction Of Physical Activity (Part-1)

Teaching your child to ride a bicycle is the very first step in motivating him or her in the field of health and fitness, apart from many other things like jogging, swimming or other sports. Diet, physical activity and emotional intelligence are three most important pillars of health in the life of a human being.

Before starting to teach a child the act of cycling, it is important to understand why it is difficult to learn a bicycle. There are three basic actions done together in bicycle riding: pedaling, steering and balancing. All these are done simultaneously and that is the reason why a cycle learner finds it difficult to learn. Therefore follow these steps to workaround this problem;

• It will be easiest for a child to concentrate on only one action : steering.
• This can be done if you, the parent or teacher substitute the action of pedaling by lightly pushing the bike forward and simultaneously balances it .
• During the first couple of days if you follow this practice, the child will learn to steer the bike and by doing so it will also learn to balance it.
• After a few days, slowly withdraw the support, step by step, and encourage the kid to learn to balance and pedal the bike. Withdrawing support should be gradual.

When the child is able to fully coordinate all the three skills of pedaling, steering and balancing, what you need to do now is just keep a watch on the child for safety. Next step is to instruct him or her to be aware of the surround traffic or people or even dogs.

Having a kids bicycle with training wheels or supporting wheels is a good idea, but initially you should support as explained above. The benefit of training wheels is that balancing is aided by them. Even with these bikes, there are traffic issues, if the child is very young.

Points to remember:

• Be vigilant on the kid while it is cycling. If your attention is diverted, safety of the child is endangered
• Let your attention be not diverted by chatting with friends while the child is cycling, pay full attention
• Choose a road which is not busy with traffic
• Backyard of the house or some corridor also may be OK.
